Elliott Cohn Headlines Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa, FL
Elliott Cohn returns to his hometown of Tampa FL for a special show at Skipper's Smokehouse with Elliott Cohn and the Cosmic Sweat Society, and very special guest Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane/Starship.
Austin, TX (Billboard Publicity Wire) August 15, 2008 -- Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Elliott Cohn of New Orleans returns to his hometown of Tampa Florida to headline a special show at Skipper's Smokehouse Friday September 19th with his band Elliott Cohn's Cosmic Sweat Society, featuring a guest appearance by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Marty Balin, founder and lead singer of the legendary 60's rock band Jefferson Airplane. Tampa artist Christie Lenee will open the show with an accoustic set at 8:00 p.m.
Elliott, who was privileged to begin his career at the age of 12 by sharing the stage at Skipper's Smokehouse with blues guitar greats like Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, and Big Daddy Kinsey, later went on to join/found many well-known Tampa bands like Motherwit, Freaks Rule, Spott, Grin, and Elliott Cohn and the Bird Street Players.
"Elliott Cohn and the Bird Street Players" disbanded in 2002 when Elliott moved to New Orleans. Before that they enjoyed some notoriety opening for acts like Galactic, MoFro, G Love and Special Sauce, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and PBS (featuring members of the Meters), often resulting in Elliott being invited onstage to perform. Since Elliott's departure, The Bird Street Players have continued to play the Tampa Bay Area on a regular basis. In 2005-2006 Bird Street players bassist Kenny Green and drummer Ian Hodge occasionally joined Elliott in New Orleans to play with Elliott Cohn's Cosmic Sweat Society and Big Sam's Funky Nation.
A prolific producer, Elliott has engineered several CDs for other New Orleans musicians, including "Take Me Back" by Big Sam's Funky Nation, and a fusion version of "The World is a Ghetto" with Shamarr Allen. Elliott sings and plays lead guitar on both productions.
Having created a strong presence on the New Orleans music scene, Elliott has performed and or recorded with many of the city's top musicians, including members of: The Neville Brothers, The Meters,The Radiators, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rebirth Brass Band, The Hot 8 Brass Band, The Soul Rebels, Papa Grows Funk, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Juice, Joe Krown, The Batiste Family, and many others.
Elliott Cohn's acclaimed Cosmic Sweat Society is a jam band specializing in funk, rock, and blues. The core of the band includes prominent New Orlean's musicians - drummer Joe Gelini, keyboardist Dave Brisson, and bassist Josh Reppel. According to Where Y'At Magazine's March 2008 edition, "Elliott Cohn's Cosmic Sweat Society lays down an aggressive funk sound that has the map of New Orlean's painted all over it - Cohn's guitar playing is a cut above and should be experienced by all."
At any given time, as is custom in New Orleans, Society "members" may sit in and play at Cohn's live performances. Some of these notable players include Jeff Watkins, saxophone player (James Brown/Joss Stone), "Mean" Willie Green, drums (Neville Brothers/Bob Dylan/Carlos Santana), Belita Woods, vocals (George Clinton's P-funk Allstars), the Lee Boys, plus many of the musicians mentioned above.
